• Family-Based Green Cards:

If a retiree has a close family member who is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, they may be able to sponsor the retiree for a green card, says the New York City Bar Association. 

• Employer Sponsorship:

Retirees who have specialized skills or experience may be sponsored by a U.S. employer for a green card, according to the New York City Bar Association. 

• Social Security Benefits:

Retirees who have worked in the U.S. for at least 10 years (40 work credits) may be eligible for Social Security benefits, or they may qualify if their home country has a totalization agreement with the U.S., according to Investopedia. 

Important Considerations:

• Green Card:

To live in the U.S. permanently, retirees need to obtain a green card, which can be done through various pathways, says VisaPlace.

If you have a green card, be aware of the rules regarding extended absences from the U.S. to avoid abandonment of your residency, according to USCIS.
