NEW YORK CITY & STATE HISTORY

New York City's history began with Dutch settlement in the early 17th century, initially named New Amsterdam, and later becoming New York City after English takeover in 1664. It played a significant role in the American Revolution and was the first national capital under the U.S. Constitution. The city's growth in the 19th and 20th centuries was fueled by immigration, industrialization, and infrastructure development, transforming it into a global metropolis.

Here's a more detailed look:

• Early Settlement and Colonial Era:

• The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape people.
• Dutch settlers established a trading post called New Amsterdam in 1624.
• The British gained control in 1664 and renamed it New York.

• Revolutionary War and Early

 Nationhood:

• New York City was a key location during the Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Long Island.
• It served as the U.S. capital from 1785 to 1790.
• George Washington was inaugurated as the first U.S. President in New York City.

• 19th and 20th Century Growth:

• The 19th century saw rapid population growth due to immigration and industrialization.
• Major infrastructure projects like the Erie Canal and the Brooklyn Bridge transformed the city.
• New York became a major center for manufacturing, trade, and finance.
• The city experienced periods of intense immigration, leading to diverse neighborhoods and cultural development.

• Modern Era:

• New York City became a global center of finance, media, and culture.
• The city faced challenges like economic hardship and urban decay, but also experienced renewal and revitalization.
Today, New York City is one of the world's most important and influential cities

POWER OF ATTORNEY

Dr Carly K Bennett has Power of Attorney in Canada & USA over Dr Sydney N Bennett since 2022-2023 after her mother had since 2001

Temporarily or permanently incapitated only with conscious decided legal will & testament

In New York, a Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone, known as your agent, to make financial and legal decisions on your behalf. This person can handle various matters, such as managing bank accounts, selling property, or handling legal claims, depending on the scope of the POA. A POA can be general or limited, and can be durable (meaning it remains valid even if you become incapacitated) or non-durable.

Key aspects of a New York Power of Attorney:

• Who can create a POA?

Any mentally competent adult can create a power of attorney in New York.

• Who can be an agent?

You can appoint any individual you trust to act as your agent, but you cannot appoint a firm.

• Notarization and Witnessing:

To be valid, a New York POA must be signed by the principal (you) in front of a notary public and two witnesses. The notary can also serve as one of the witnesses.

• Durable vs. Non-Durable:

A durable POA continues to be effective even if you become incapacitated. A non-durable POA terminates if you become incapacitated.

• When does it end?

A POA ends upon your death, if you revoke it, if a court revokes it, or if your agent's authority is terminated. It also ends if you become incompetent (if it's not durable).

• Healthcare Proxy:

A Healthcare Proxy is a separate document in New York that allows you to appoint someone to make healthcare decisions for you if you are unable to do so.

• NYSLRS POA:

The New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS) has its own specific durable power of attorney form for retirement benefit transactions.

Important Considerations:

• Consult an attorney:

It's highly recommended to consult with an attorney before creating a power of attorney to ensure it meets your specific needs and complies with New York law.

• Carefully choose your agent:

Select someone you trust implicitly, as they will have significant authority to act on your behalf.

• Review periodically:

It's wise to review your power of attorney periodically (and when there are changes in the law) to ensure it is still appropriate.
